AH30  South Coast & Þórsmörk 1 May 2013 -
30 Sep 2013

Highlights:
  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall
  • Þórsmörk
  • Stakkholtsgjá

Tour Description:

We begin this tour by driving over the mountain heath Hellisheiði towards Selfoss town and then along the south shore to Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

From there our journey continues towards the interior to our main attraction, Þórsmörk (i.e. Thor’s Woodland), a nature reserve shielded on three sides by glaciers and mountains. The glacial melt-off forms rivers that have to be crossed on the way, which can change in a matter of hours from an innocent stream into a thunderous torrent. Some days the crossing is quite challenging or even impossible but our skilled drivers are very experienced in these driving conditions and will take you safely across the rivers.

Panoramas IcelandOnce there we make a stop to enjoy the breathtaking scenery with its multitude of small gullies and valleys, clad with low birch-trees that create seemingly endless possibilities for the nature lover. Various hiking routes are available and everyone can find a suitable one. There is enough time to take about a one hour hike and enjoy your lunch (which you can either bring with you or buy at our stop in Hvolsvöllur).

On our way back we will stop at the rugged gorge of Stakkholtsgjá for a 1 hour hike to the end of the gorge. A small river needs to be crossed on the way by stepping from one stone to another. At the end of the gorge we are rewarded by a nice waterfall, which can be reached by stepping up some bigger rocks/stones This tour is truly unforgettable for the nature lover at heart and ideal as a hiking trip.

Me and a German lady were the only 2 on the tour, plus the guide, on the last tour day of the season. It was SPEECHLESS. Amazing... amazing. And the guide was very friendly and thought us a lot. Hidden waterfalls and a lot of nature. A TIP: bring some spare socks or river boots.

I really loved this tour, despite it was raining very very very bad all day long. Soaking wet the magic stil hits me, with this splendid autumn colors and the huge proportions of the visited glaciers. We did not see the waterfall in the gorge, as the rain caused the river to be too big to cross by foot. But Seljalandsfoss is an amazing sight too. The only minor point is too less time to see it all, but thats me the photographer who is like a kid in the candy shop. Also, not forget to buckle up (its law in Iceland). I terribly hit my head during the ride, still feel it after a week. My own fault but let others be warned! ;-) It is a rough ride, and for those who suffer, it is best to take medication with you for carsickness. Just in case. It is Iceland in pure raw form.

this tour was great! The guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and we got to see a lot during the tour. There was a lot of driving but the frequent stops and scenery made up for it. The walks we did were amazing and a bit rugged, which was nice for a challenge! Overall I was very happy with the tour and would highly recommend it, Þórsmörk is a must-see!

I only wish that we had been able to take this trip in a Super Jeep rather than a bus. I would've really liked to have had that experience.
