AH33  Northern Lights Mystery 11 Sep 2011 -
15 Apr 2012

Highlights:
  • Search for the Northern Lights

Tour Description:

Join us for a mysterious trip, on a dark winter night. Any time from the onset of autumn darkness until the light nights of spring we can witness one of nature’s most spectacular displays; the phenomenon which we call the Northern Lights. Far from the glow of the city lights, we hunt for the elusive Aurora Borealis – known as the Northern Lights. Together we will search for these magnificent auroras. On a clear night, we may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the sky in dramatic shapes, colors, patterns and sizes.

Click here for moreThe Northern Lights are visible from September through April but can only be seen on a clear night. Therefore, we reserve the right to cancel this tour if the evening sky is heavily clouded or weather conditions are not favorable. A decision is taken daily at 6 pm whether the tour will take place or not. All hotels and booking agents in Reykjavik are informed by email about our decision so please contact the front desk of your hotel or the Tour Desk at hotel Saga, Loftleidir and Hilton to find out whether we will be operating the tour. Before we start this tour we always check the weather forecast around the south western part of Iceland. From experience, we decide where each journey will lead us, for the best possibilities to see the Northern Lights.

Please note:  We cannot guarantee sightings even if the tour is operated. In these cases we offer our customers a second tour free of charge. Please book the second tour by calling our tour desk at 540 1313.

Please note: Those that join the Northern Lights Mystery tour on 31 December may miss the fireworks in Reykjavik. The Northern Lights tour is a 3 to 5 hour tour and we cannot guarantee that we will be back in Reykjavik before midnight. If you do not want to miss the fireworks, please do not book this tour for 31 December!

First night out , no light show but loved seeing a volcanic crater and liked the guides commentary. Second night out there was no way we would see anything given the weather and the commentary wasnt up to anything. Really felt it should have been called off when the blizzard conditions started and waiting an hour in a petrol station & KFC is hardly exciting. Third time lucky but back to with our original guide who seemed really pleased for us that we eventually got to see them. Slightly scary but very cool when bus driver switched off all the bus lights on windy mountain road in order to see the Northern Lights again. Also really appreciated him stopping at the top to let us all out again. Thank god for the companys policy of letting you go out again if you dont see the Northern Lights the first time!

Although we didn't see the lights, the bus driver tried to find spots with cloudless sky to increase the chances of the northern lights sighting. The organisation of the tour was good, the only problem was the lack of toilet stop for 4 hours, which especially after the pub visit just before, might be quite hard for some people to manage. Also, since there were 3 coaches altogether, the drop-offs to hotels could have been combined within the buses to make it easier and faster instead of all 3 buses dropping off people at the same hotels, but that's just an idea for the future. Overall, good experience, but a shame the aurora did not show up that night.

Thank you for your review and comments. We try to schedule a stop for toilets as much as possible during this tour. We also try our best to keep away from city lights and go to areas where there is much darkness, those locations don´t always have facilities nearby. Regrettably the lights were not seen that night but remember we offer a free Northern Lights tour for all passengers when lights are not seen on any given night.

This was our third attempt of the weekend to see the lights and i would like to thank the girls in your office ( dee dee was one and i did not catch the other girls name). We were in and out of the office checking if the tour was going or not and they were both very helpful and friendly. Excellent tour. The guide was good fun and kept us well informed. Unfortunately we were unable to see the lights and even though it was cold we still enyoyed it. We are hoping to come back in December 2012 and will be coming on your tour again, hopefully we will be able to see the lights then.

Myself and my boyfriend went on this tour in January. We had to wait 2 days before finally going out (due to the weather). Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and made the drive to the first place more interesting by teaching us some Icelandic, and giving us information on Iceland, Reykjavik and the northern lights. Unfortauntely, we were unable to see the lights. The tour guides were great, however, they were there to answer any questions we had, and were so knowledgable. If one site was too cloudy, we moved to another site. It really felt like they could not do enough to try and get us to see the lights. However, one comment (not criticism, just a comment) that I have is perhaps before leaving the sites, the guide could tell the people on the tour exactly why the conditions arent right for seeing the lights. This could stop negative comments such as one seen which said "the guide was too impatient". We went on other tours with this company, and despite not seeing the lights, I could not recommend this company enough, and if any friends come to Iceland, I will definately recommend them to you.
