AH32  Landmannalaugar by Bus 19 Jun 2010 -
11 Sep 2010

We depart from Reykjavik and head to the interior geothermal area Landmannalaugar, often referred to as “The Pearl of the Central Highlands”. We journey through the beautiful countryside of southern Iceland and proceed into the highlands through Þjórsárdalur valley and visit Hjálparfoss waterfall.

Landmannalaugar’s colorful mountains are formed by centuries of volcanic activity in the area and the picturesque natural landscape in this raw climate is simply breathtaking. While there, we can enjoy a relaxing bath in a natural warm pool which was created when many hot and cold springs in the area combined, or take a leisurely hike in the surrounding rhyolite mountain paths. The tour continues back to the west and past Iceland’s most infamous and active volcano, Hekla, which was believed to be the gateway to hell during the Middle Ages. The volcano has had frequent eruptions in the past years and has left thick layers of ash and pumice over the landscape. We return to Reykjavík over Hellisheiði mountain heath.

We recommend you bring your bathing suit and a towel.
