AH36  Vestmannaeyjar - Pompei of the North 15 May 2012 -
15 Sep 2012

Highlights:
  • Vestmannaeyjar islands
  • cave Klettshellir

Tour Description:

Vestmannaeyjar, or The Westman Islands, are truly a wonder of Nature. The youngest island of the Vestmannaeyjar celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2003 and the oldest one is close to 40.000 years old!

Our transfer bus (non-guided) takes you to the pier at Bakkafjara on the south coast (about a one hour drive) and from there the ferry (non-guided transfer) takes another 30 minutes to reach the islands. Once there we will be greeted by a local guide and join a bus tour around Heimaey island.

We will visit the puffin nexting area in Storhofdi and walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted only a few years ago as well as exploring the flora of the new lava field.

After a lunch break we join a boat cruise where we will see many of the wonders of the Vestmannaeyjar nature. Colourful ocean caves, thousands of seabirds and, occasionally during the summer, groups of whales. On the return from the cruise we will enjoy instrumental music in the natural echo of the ocean cave Klettshellir.

The ferry takes you back to the mainland, where our bus is waiting to take you back to Reykjavík. The return transfer (ferry and bus) is non-guided.

For those who have the extra time this tour is really good. Includes boat trip around entire island viewing nesting sea birds, including puffins (nesting under ground), tour by small bus inland including small hike to volcano bowl, movie on 1972 or 1973 eruption requiring all inhabitants to leave the island ASAP, like now, Take it and you will not regret it.

Dear sirs, We were back to China last Sun day. We very enjoyed the day tour to Vestmannaeyjar Island arranged by your company. Your driver was very responsible and be with us all the way giving introduction and telling funny stories. We did got the feeling of volcano eruption on 1974? by watching the movie and climbed up to the mouth of the volcano afterwards. The captain of the boat tour was a very smart guy, we were driven around the island and saw all the beautiful scenic spots and enjoyed his professional skill of saxophone playing in the colorful cave(that was unique). We have been deeply impressed of the beauty of Vestmannaeyjar - Pompei of the North! Thank you very much and hope to have another chance to visit North coast of Iceland one day! Best regards, Y.J.Sun

Really great tour. The ferry over was very nice; all the guides were very helpful; enjoyed the lunch. The tour of the island and seeing first hand the damage done by the volcano was truly amazing. That was our favorite part of the tour. The boat ride around the island allowed us to see a different perspective and we saw some birds; caves and small islands. We enjoyed the music in the cave. Thanks Judy and Ron
